The Philadelphia-based Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools has announced the opening of an examination center in Bangalore, its first in India after a gap of more than 30 years.
The first examination at the Bangalore center will be conducted on March 13, 2002.
Several organisations in India and the US were trying for years to bring back the center to India which was closed in the sixties on a wave of anti-American sentiment at that time. Foreign nurses who want to work in the US have to pass the examination conducted by CGFNS.
The commission has examination centers in about 100 countries around the world.
The CGFNS center closest to India was in Colombo, Sri Lanka. But that was closed down recently due to the political situation there.
If necessary, additional centers will be opened in India later, the commission said in a press release.
The commission is scheduled to conduct three examinations - March 13, July 10 and November 13 (2002). The deadline to receive the applications for the March 13 exam is December 12.
The exam center number for the Bangalore location is 850.
Currently, the commission is able to accommodate approximately 1,500 candidates only.
America is currently facing a severe shortage of nurses - more than 100,000. Over the next 20 years it will rise to 400,000, experts believe.
