Bush signs stringent anti-terrorism bill

"This legislation is essential not only to pursuing and punishing terrorists but also preventing more atrocities," Bush said at a White House ceremony.

On Thursday, the Senate had overwhelmingly approved the anti-terrorism bill a day after Congress passed it by a 357-66 vote.

The bill aims to strengthen the information-gathering network of law enforcement agencies and increase their electronic surveillance powers as many existing laws were outdated.

The new law will also focus on immigration and banking procedures.

However, civil rights activists fear that this law would be akin to rewarding terrorists by putting curbs on the very freedoms that they seek to destroy.
