The Taleban militia in Afghanistan said that American fighter jets had dropped cluster bombs in their latest overnight attacks on the militia's frontlines, even as the Pakistan-based Afghan Islamic Press said 17 civilians were killed in raids around Herat and Kandahar.
The head of the Taleban's Bakhtar information agency, Abdul Hanan Hemat, said on Thursday that the jets had attacked frontlines north of Kabul and at Keshendeh and Dara-e-Souf, close to the key town of Mazar-e-Sharif.
"Cluster bombs were dropped and many have not yet exploded," Hemat told a news agency.
Meanwhile, AIP reported that at least 17 civilians were killed during the overnight air strikes around the cities of Herat and Kandahar
The agency said at least 16 were killed when planes bombed the village of Takht Alaman near Herat.
One person was killed in the raids on Kandahar, the seat of the militia, it said.
