Pak nuke scientists' Taleban links probed

Two leading Pakistani nuclear scientists are under scrutiny by Pakistani authorities to establish whether they had links with the Taleban militia, prompting fears the Taleban or even Osama bin Laden might have access to radioactive material.

An agency report quoting Pakistan government officials identified the two scientists as Sultan Bashiru-Din Mehmood and Abdul Majid.

Sultan Bashiru-Din Mehmood is a leading member of Pakistan's nuclear programme, while Majid worked with Mehmood at the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission for years.

Mehmood was detained on Tuesday by intelligence agents in Lahore, the report said.

The report quoting sources speaking on condition of anonymity, said that the two are being questioned about whether they have any links with Afghan figures, including Taleban leader Mullah Mohammed Omar.
