Muhammad Najeeb in Islamabad
Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf and Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee may meet on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session in New York next month, a senior official has said.
Confirming that Musharraf would be attending the UN session in November, he said besides a "possible" meeting with US President George W Bush, the Pakistani president would meet New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani and visit the WTC towers site.
Asked if Pakistan has approached India for a Musharraf-Vajpayee meeting during the UN session, he said it was Pakistan's proposal and "we would soon be sharing it with the Indian authorities."
He said Pakistan was hopeful that Vajpayee would agree to the proposal. "This would for sure help in easing out the tension."
If both sides agree to the meeting, this would be the first-ever contact between the two leaders since the July Agra summit that was inconclusive.
"We think this would be the continuation of the Agra summit and India this time would seriously enter into talks," the official said.
Vajpayee would be in the US to attend the UN session and to meet Bush.
US Secretary of State Colin Powell announced in New Delhi on October 17 that Bush had invited Vajpayee for talks in Washington on November 9.
