Pakistan has dismissed apprehensions that the renewed United States military aid to the country would end up being used against India.
External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh, speaking in a joint press conference with US Secretary of State Colin Powell on Wednesday, said that with Washington set to lift more sanctions against Islamabad "it is our hope that economic aid is utilised for the right purpose".
Pakistan Foreign Minister Abdul Sattar on Thursday told The Washington Times newspaper in an interview: "The weapons used by militants in Kashmir are all small calibre and not purchased from the United States."
He did not say who gave them these weapons as well as the heavier arms used by them during the Kargil conflict.
With the US House of Representatives earlier this week passing a bill giving President George W Bush the power to lift sanctions against Pakistan, decks have been cleared for military and economic aid to Islamabad. The bill was unanimously passed by the US Senate on October 5.
Democratic Congressman Frank Pallone had opposed the bill saying the military aid may be used against India.
