Bush orders $50 million aid to Pak

United States President George W Bush has ordered release of a $50 million grant for Pakistan, citing it as vital to the security interests of Washington.

This, coupled with an assistance package announced in September, raises the total bilateral aid to Pakistan to $100 million. The aid started flowing after Islamabad promised to support the US-led anti-terrorism campaign.

"It is important to the security interests of the United States to furnish up to $50 million for Pakistan," Bush said on Wednesday in a memorandum to Secretary of State Colin Powell while authorising the aid, according to a White House press release.

Such provisions can be made by the US president under the Foreign Assistance Act if it is considered necessary to protect the national security interests.

The US aid to Pakistan, crucial for the country's ailing economy, was resumed after the Bush administration waived sanctions imposed on the country after the 1998 nuclear tests.
