Take out Omar first: Musharraf

President Pervez Musharraf of Pakistan said on Sunday that he plans to tell American Secretary of State Colin Powell that the United States should concentrate on "taking out" the supreme commander of the Taleban, Mullah Mohammed Omar, to bring the war in Afghanistan to a swift conclusion.

"Get Omar and Osama bin Laden won't be able to operate, he will be on the run," General Musharraf told CBS Radio in an interview. "You must first take out the centre of gravity, that is what I would do if I were running this campaign."

Gen Musharraf is meeting Gen Powell on Monday. The latter is on a two-day visit to Pakistan and India.

Musharraf said that while his government did not have exact intelligence of Laden's whereabouts, Pakistan's intelligence services were working in close cooperation with locals in Afghanistan to try and locate him.

Referring to frequent -- and violent -- protests in Pakistan against the US-led campaign in Afghanistan, Musharraf said the majority of the people were solidly behind his government.

"The people love me. I'm a popular leader wherever I go," he told CBS Radio. "Those who are protesting against me are idiots. They don't know anything."
