Chances of peace in Afghanistan bleak: Pakistan

Pakistan Foreign Minister Abdul Sattar said chances of peace in Afghanistan were grim even if a broad-based government came to power in that country, reports SADA news agency.

"I do not think that peace can return to Afghanistan in the near future even after setting up of a government there," he said on his return on Thursday after attending a meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC).

Terming Saudi-born dissident Osama bin Laden a 'terrorist', Sattar admitted: "Osama bin Laden has been found to be involved in terrorist acts."

However, the minister argued, an entire nation (Afghanistan) could not be held hostage for the deeds of one person.

Sattar, however, made it clear that freedom struggles in the world could not be termed as terrorism.

Sattar expressed ignorance about the reported handing over of Baluchistan airbases to United States forces, saying the foreign office would give a detailed briefing in this regard on Friday.

The US has begun bombing Afghanistan after the ruling Taleban militia refused to hand over bin Laden, the prime suspect in the September 11 terror attacks that killed thousands in New York and Washington.
