'US has assured military operation in Afghan will be short'

Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf on Monday said he has been assured that the US-led military operation in Afghanistan would be 'short, sharp and targeted'.

Addressing a press conference in Islamabad, he said only terrorist camps in the vicinity of cities like Kabul, Kandahar, Jalalabad and Mazar-e-Sharif have been hit.

He said that Pakistan has allowed use of its air space for the attack but no operation was launched from its soil.

Musharraf said the operation, which began on Sunday night, was not against the people of Afghanistan but was aimed at Saudi exile Osama bin Laden and his Al-Qaeda network.

Outlining Pakistan's position, he said the international coalition should ensure that the Northern Alliance fighting with the Taleban regime did not take advantage of the situation.

Musharraf said the post-military action scenario should be balanced and a broad-based multi-ethnic dispensation should be ushered in taking the demographic complexion of Afghanistan into account.
