US navy searching merchant ships for Osama

The United States on Wednesday said its forces are stopping and checking 'suspicious' merchant ships leaving Pakistan, in their bid to capture Osama bin Laden, suspected to be responsible for the September 11 terror attacks on World Trade Centre and the Pentagon.

"It's not as if we're stopping every ship, but if we have reason to suspect that they're helping the senior Al Qaeda leadership, then we have put out notice that we will board those ships and inspect them," Pentagon spokesman Lieutenant Colonel David Lapan said.

He revealed the operation began on Tuesday.

He added that US commandos inside Afghanistan -- now numbering a few hundred -- have also set up checkpoints to block the movement of supplies and trap fleeing Taleban and Al Qaeda troops.

Meanwhile, two amphibious assault ships in the Indian Ocean -- each with 2,200 Marines onboard -- were awaiting orders to join in search for bin Laden.
