Pakistan beefs up security around mosques

The government has ordered heavy security cover in mosques in Pakistan fearing fundamentalist attacks after war losses of the Taleban militia in neighbouring Afghanistan.

Clerics have been asked to provide lists of permanent residents at mosques and police are carrying out checks, Online news agency reported. The measures come on the eve of the Muslim holy month of Ramzan that begins on November 17.

After the US began strikes in Afghanistan, a wave of protests erupted across Pakistan with angry mobs denouncing the bombing. Scores of people were killed in the riots where protestors shouted anti-US slogans and slammed the Musharraf government for supporting the US.

Fundamentalist groups have threatened more protests if the bombing carried on during Ramzan.

In the new security measures, cars would only be allowed to park at a certain distance from the mosques and before prayers, mosques would be searched.
