Musharraf for special UN force in Afghanistan

Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf on Tuesday advocated creation of a special force under the United Nations umbrella to be stationed in Afghanistan. He proposed that the troops could be drawn from members of the Organisation of Islamic Countries.

Calling for immediate efforts to bring in a political arrangement in the war-ravaged nation, Musharraf told a televised press conference in Istanbul that any delay in filling up the "vacuum" in Kabul would lead to an increased danger of in-fighting among the various ethnic groups.

He said, "The Northern Alliance, or any ethnic group, should not be allowed" to establish government in Kabul.

"There is a need to work out some kind of a force under the UN umbrella", which includes troops from OIC nations, he added.

Musharraf said Turkish and Pakistani forces "can also play a role" in a future dispensation in Afghanistan.

The president also ruled out the possibility of stationing of US forces in Central Asia.
