Osama says he has nuclear and chemical weapons

In an interview to the Pakistani newspaper Dawn, Saudi renegade Osama bin Laden, who is suspected to be involved in the September 11 terror attacks, claimed that his group, Al Qaida, has in its possession nuclear and chemical weapons.

In the interview, which was published on Saturday, he said his group would have no hesitation in using them, if they were threatened.

"I wish to declare that if America used chemical or nuclear weapons against us then we may retort with chemical and nuclear weapons," the interview quoted bin Laden as saying.

"We have chemical and nuclear weapons as a deterrent," he added.

Meanwhile, White House said it viewed bin Laden's threat 'seriously'.

The White House declined to directly respond to the interview, but said through a spokesman: "We've said that we've suspected all along that this organisation has been trying to acquire chemical, biological or nuclear weapons."

"We take these past statements seriously and we will do everything we can to prevent their acquisition of these materials," said the spokesman.
