Musharraf warns radicals; 500 arrested

More than 500 persons were taken into preventive custody, even as Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf warned the radical protestors of his determination to 'ensure stability at all costs'.

Radical Islamic groups have called for protests against the US-led strikes on Friday

In a special message issued from New York Musharraf said everything would be done to 'keep Pakistan peaceful, stable and secure'.

He added, "Ours has been a very tolerant government. We believe in full freedom of expression and we lay value on democracy."

Musharraf also asked the people to 'respect inter-faith sensitivities'.

Musharraf strongly defending his decision to join the US action said, "The narrow parochial and political interests of a few should not deter us from demonstrating the maturity of a responsible nation."

He said "Pakistan was, undoubtedly caught in a situation where choices are few and decisions harder to make. But equally great is the opportunity to have ourselves establish as a peace loving moderate state responsive to its duties as a member of the comity of nations."

Musharraf said: "We can seize this opportunity to our great advantage or we can just drift along unnoticed. Pakistan, however, was not created to drift unnoticed. We shall chart out own course to destiny."
