Taleban hands over US commando's body

The body of a US commando captured by the Taleban in Afghanistan has been handed over to the Red Cross and is expected to arrive in Quetta on Wednesday evening, a Taleban official said.

Maulvi Hammad said the body of Major John Bolton, who Taleban sources on Sunday claimed had died of kidney failure at a hospital in Kandahar, would arrive in a day or two, SADA reported on Monday.

He added more than 20 US commandos, accused of spying, were being held by the Taleban.

Bolton, who had apparently been arrested recently, had identified himself as Major Mohammad Ayub but failed to convince the Taleban militia that accused him of spying for Washington.

The US is bombing Afghanistan for harbouring Osama bin Laden, prime suspect in the terror attacks in New York and Washington.

Meanwhile, lending credence to the Taleban claims of holding American soldiers, Iranian news agency IRNA quoting the governor of Kandahar said several American 'spies' and special forces troops had been captured.

"Mullah Mohammad-Hassan Rahmani, the governor of Kandahar, confirmed the arrest of several American aggressors in Afghanistan, but did not give their number," IRNA said.

"The Americans were arrested either because they were spies or because they were a part of recent commando attack on Afghanistan," Rahmani told IRNA without giving the date of their arrest.
