Pakistan will recognise interim govt in Afghanistan

Pakistan on Thursday said it would recognise the interim government in Afghanistan and ruled out forcing 3.1 million Afghan refugees back from its territory.

Addressing a joint press conference with Organisation of Islamic Conference Secretary General Abdelouhed Belkziz, Pakistan Foreign Minister Abdul Sattar said Pakistan fully supported Afghanistan's interim government and will establish diplomatic links with it.

Referring to repatriation of Afghan refugees, he said Pakistan was very much encouraged by Bonn agreement among different Afghan factions and hoped the refugees would return to their homeland.

"We have not embarked upon a programme of forcible repatriation of Afghan refugees. We have been cooperating with the world community to take care of refugees. No decision has been taken by Pakistan government to cause anxiety of a forcible repatriation," Sattar said.

On Wednesday, the Pakistan Cabinet had decided to move the thousands of Afghan refugees from the cities to refugee camps near the border, so that they could be repatriated after the situation improved.
