Hamilton resident charged in temple attack case in Canada

Ajit Jain in Toronto

Hamilton police chief Ken Robertson has said that they have charged a 36-year-old Hamilton resident with arson in the destruction of a Hindu temple in the city on September 15, four days after the tragic terror attacks in New York and Washington.

Robertson hasn't released the name of the accused but said more arrests are expected in this case.

The announcement was made on November 30 at a fund-raiser, held in Hamilton at Michelangelo Banquet Hall, for rebuilding the temple.

Over 1,000 guests, including Federal Minister of Canadian Heritage Sheilla Copps, Ontario Minister of Transport Brad Clark, former Ontario Lt-Gov Lincoln Alexander, Hamilton Mayor Bob Wade and dozens of members of parliament and members of the Ontario legislature attended.

The event was co-chaired by Indo-Canadian community activist Neelam Tandon and Liberal MP Beth Phinney.

Tandon called the news of the arrest as 'excellent' and would bring peace of mind to her community.

"It will put an end to whatever doubts they had in their minds that a group was, perhaps, working against them," she said.

"This is our way to do some good after what happened in New York," Phinney said. "It just shows the spirit of Hamilton."

"We're still looking into the reasons why it happened," said Police Inspector Ken Bond.
