It is official. Destroyer INS Mysore will participate in the Tall Ships parade during Sail Boston 2000 July 11-16.

More than 100 Tall Ships from Russia, Ukraine, Japan, Germany, Bulgaria, Spain, Italy, Great Britain and several other countries have committed to parade into historic Boston Harbor as part of the International Sailing Association's Tall Ship 2000 Race Series.

Dusty Rhodes, project manager for Sail Boston 2000, told rediff.com, "Sail Boston 2000 is thrilled to host the Tall Ships as they commence the race from Boston to Halifax. Sail Boston is proud to boast free access to the public to all ships visiting the port for the entirety of the event."

Rhodes is expecting about four million visitors to the city of Boston during the 10 days of Sail Boston 2000. "It will be a truly magnificent event for not only the city but for the state."

The USS Constitution, America's ship of state, is expected to lead the Grand Parade of Sail into Boston Harbor, beginning the Tall Ships' official port call in Boston. It is the oldest commissioned warship in the world.

Commodore Vijai K Bhansali of the Indian Navy visited Boston in April to conduct a site survey and berth inspection of Boston Harbor.

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had commissioned INS Mysore this June. The 6,700-tonne destroyer was built at the Mazagon Dock in Bombay. It boasts of a wide arsenal such as 16 surface-to-surface missiles and two surface-to-air missiles, torpedoes and rockets, and a 100mm gun and four 30mm rapid-fire close-in weapon systems equipped with laser technology.

With top speed of more than 32 knots, it has sophisticated radar, an indigenously developed sonar and electronic warfare system, and a state-of-the-art network.
