Fast Facts

  • Best time to visit:

Anytime between October and May. Or shoot for a festival season like Chapchur Kut. Although Mizoram looks heavenly in the monsoon it can get really wet. And an occasional downpour is not unusual during spring or winter.

  • Political situation:

At one time the political situation was complicated by insurgency and the presence of militants fighting for secession. But today the state is peaceful, perhaps the most tranquil region in the North-East.

  • Getting there:

Indian Airlines operates a daily flight from Calcutta to Silchar. IC CD 255 departs at 1030 hours from Calcutta and reaches Silchar at 1130 hours. The one-way economy fare is Rs 2,085.
It takes seven hours to reach Aizawl from Silchar by road (180 km).

  • Getting around:

Taxis are easily available at Silchar airport to take you on to Aizawl. There are several buses connecting the two towns -- both by private and the Mizoram State Transport services. Mini buses are easily available to take one around Aizawl.

  • Where to stay:

The Tourist Lodge, Chaltlang, tel # 03832-21083 charges Rs 300 for a double room.

The Ritz, Bara Bazaar, tel # 03832-23131 charges Rs 400 for a double room.

Hotel Sangchi charges Rs 300 for a double.

  • Where to eat:

Try Khampat or Solomon's Cave at Bara Bazaar. The bazaar has a variety of small eateries where local cuisine can be sampled. Otherwise, the food at Ritz is a safe bet.

  • Tourist information:

Contact L R Sailo, director or Lalsiami , the senior PRO, information and public relations department, government of Mizoram, Aizawl, tel # 03832-3190, 3206. Or tel # 0382-2449. The staff manning the tourist office at Chandmari are very helpful.
