Hanukkah, the eight-day Jewish festival of dedication celebrated all over the world, is an occasion of joy in Bombay too. The city has a tiny Jewish population – numbering about 2,700 – who flock to their neighbouring synagogues for this holiday.

December, in fact, is a busy month for Bombay’s unusual synagogues. Hanukkah. Visits from tourists. And from Indian Jews settled abroad, who have come home for the winter.
