A kingdom on the river

The Raja Rudra Pratap Fort

A Bundela chief, Raja Rudra Pratap was out hunting in the dhak
forests when he stumbled into Orchha, or 'the hidden place'.
He built his fort and palace on an island in the Betwa river and connected
it to the mainland with a strong granite bridge.
The location is ideal, with the palace overlooking the river and
lush green countryside. The beauty of deserted, decaying Orchha is that you are probably looking, today, at a kingdom as it might have existed 500 years ago, when it was conceived by Pratap, who incidentally did not live to see its completion, because he died trying to rescue a cow from a tiger.
