What's worse the canopy that once protected her majesty from heat and rain has disappeared. Today she sits under the shade of several trees, like a commoner, with the rest of the statues. Her regal cape is splotched with the droppings of crows.

Says Jyotish Desai, curator of the Bhaudaji Lad museum, "These statues were brought to our premises during the 1960s when the Samyukta Maharashtra Movement was at its height and anti-colonial sentiment was at its peak. The then leaders did not allow these statues to rest in peace as they reflected the signs of slavery even after the British left India."
