 Hazratganj, situated at the centre of the city is a modern neighbour hood,
with wide avenues and large shops where one will find just about
everything and anything.
But for a flavour of the old city one should go to the Chowk
or Aminabad. These two places are the main bazaars of Lucknow and
are fascinating places to wander through. A labyrinth of narrow winding gullies, the little box like shops sell attar
(perfume made in the traditional way from essential oils, which
are mixed with fragrances) jhaalar (colourful tasselled
borders for dupattas), delicious kebabs, rumali rotis, kites... actaully a mind-boggling seelction of knick-knacks and bric-a-brac.

Chikan Work
Lucknow is famous for its hand-woven embroidery known as chikan work.
It is done on saris, salwar-kurta sets, tablecloths and bed linen.
The shops at Janpath market have a good collection but the prices
are lower at Aminabad and the Chowk.
