Ladakh Fact File

An Indian Airlines Boeing 737 flies directly into Ladakh (the world's highest airport) five times a week. Private airlines too introduce flights in season. One hour and 15 minutes away, the best time to travel to Ladakh is during the months of July, August and September. Leh is a 24 hour drive from Manali, Himachal Pradesh but the drive though spectacular, is rather tiring. Accommodation for every budget is available including comfy rooms in yurts or Ladakhi tents and restaurants in Leh town serve up a variety of food.

Ladakhis have been fighting for a separate state. But the mood is gentle and civilised and unlike the strife that has frozen life in the forbidden Kashmir valley, nearby Ladakh is calm, safe and unaffected. However it is therefore safest not to route one's travel through Kashmir.
