If you have one day: Visit Lutyen's Delhi and take a quick tour of the gracious buildings that the British built which gives New Delhi its character. Try to squeeze in a leisurely visit to the Red Fort in the afternoon.

If you have two days: On the second day head out to Old Delhi and visit the Red Fort (if you have not already seen it) and Chandni Chowk. Late afternoons, head out to Mehrauli and visit the Qutub Minar.

If you have five days: On the third day, visit Nizamuddin or set out for the Nigambodh Ghats. In the afternoon try an off-the-beaten-track and visit the Jamali-Kamali tombs or Bhumi Bhatiari ka Mahal or Begum Mahal or the Digamabara Jain Temple and Bird Hospital or Roshanara Bagh or Zinat ul Masjid or visit Shalimar Bagh. Alternately, spend the third day and night at Neemrana or at Rishikesh or Dehra Dun. On the fourth day, take a day trip out to the Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary or Kurukshetra. Alternately, spend the fourth and fifth day at Surajkund or Patiala or Damdama Lake or at Bharatpur or Alwar.

Tanga tour: Take an Indian-style horse-drawn carriage and ride around Old Delhi. View the Ajmeri Gate, Jama Masjid, Chandni Chowk and the Red Fort. Tangas are easily available outside the Delhi Railway Station. Do remember to negotiate and fix the fare before you set out.

Seven city tour: Scan the surviving relics of each of Delhi's seven cities. Visit Qutub Minar, the living 'remains' of the first city, Lal Kot. Visit Hauz Khas and view the walls that remain of the the 2nd city, Siri. Head out to Tughlaqabad, (eight kilometres east of the Qutub Minar) and view the few walls, tombs and fort that remain of the 3rd city. The site of Jahanpanah, the 4th city, is located near the Hauz Khas villlage where a few walls of the city just barely survive. View the Ashoka pillar at Firozabad , the only relic that survives of the 5th city, Firoze Shah Kotla. Lodhi Gardens is strewn with remains of the 6th city. And Old Delhi or Shahjehanabad, with the Red Fort, Chandni Chowk (which you may have already had a chance to see) are landmarks of the 7th city which is living and well.

Evening tour: Begin with the son-et-lumiere show at the Red Fort. Go on to visit any of these Delhi temples: the Yog Maya Mandir, Jhandewalan Mandir or the Kalkaji Mandir, where aarti (the evening prayer) may be in progress. End the tour with a quick round of the floodlit buildings of Lutyen's Delhi.
