Bookings
The only way to book accommodation on these two hikes is through
the government-run Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam Ltd.

GMVN can do advance bookings at their hotels in Uttarkashi, Harsil,
Gangotri, and Bhojbasa. They also have organised tours that cover
Yamunotri and Gangotri, as well as Kedarnath and Badrinath. These
tours do not go beyond Gangotri town, so hikers have to break away from
the main tour if they want to do Tapovan.
Jankichatti and Hanumanchatti, on the Yamunotri trail, have no
established GMVN accommodation. But there are plenty of small
hotels, some of which are affiliated to the GMVN network.
If you are booking in advance, and want to stop by at Harsil,
don't forget to book Wilson House, instead of the regular hotel.
If you cannot book through Bombay, then Delhi also has a GMVN
office, through which the same bookings can be made. Further,
if you just land up in the Himalayas and want to do these hikes
with bookings, then Hardwar, Rishikesh and Uttarkashi all have
GMVN offices. You would have to pass through one of these
towns to access these hikes.
We did the trip with no bookings, and everything worked out fine.
So just go.
