October 23, 2012 19:35 IST

Yuki Bhambri shocked third seed Dmitry Tursunov to progress to the second round of the ATP Challenger, but his doubles partner, Divij Sharan, went down fighting to sixth seed Yuichi Sugita, in Seoul, on Tuesday.

Yuki scored a 6-4, 7-6(5) victory over his formidable Russian opponent, once a top-20 player, in the first round of the US $100,000 hard court event.

Tursunov is currently ranked 119 while Yuki is 181.

It was the second meeting between the two players. The head-to-head score is now 1-1. The first match was in 2010, in Thailand, when Tursunov beat the Indian in straight sets.

Yuki next plays Korean wild card Nam Ji Sung.

The left-handed Divij pushed his Japanese opponent hard before losing his first round match 2-6, 7-5, 4-6.

Yuki and Divij are seeded third in the doubles. They open their campaign against the unseeded pair of Sugita and Taipei's Jimmy Wang.
