Somdev through to second round, meets Youzhny

Somdev Devvarman sailed into the second round of the men's singles at Wimbledon on Tuesday after his German opponent Denis Gremelmayr retired hurt midway through the first round match.

The Indian ace was leading 6-4, 4-2 when Gremelmayr conceded the match.

Somdev next meets 18th seed Mikhail Youzhny of Russia, who defeated Argentine Juan Monaco 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 in his first round match.

In the second set too, the Indian had the upperhand after breaking Gremelmayr and going 4-2 up.

The victory was Somdev's first on the hallowed greens of the All-England Club.

Earlier, Sania Mirza aggravated an injury in her left knee during her first round defeat in the women's singles.

It left her doubles title bid in disarray.

She was troubled by the injury and had the knee strapped during her 6-7, 6-2, 3-6 loss to France's Virginie Razzano.

Her doubles participation with Russia's Elena Vesnina now rests on the result of an ultrasound scan.
