West Ham win amid crowd violence

Premier League West Ham United beat London rivals Millwall 3-1 after extra time in the League Cup second round on Tuesday in a match marred by crowd disturbances before and during the game.

gianfranco zolaThird division Millwall came within three minutes of a shock as they led their more illustrious hosts 1-0 with a Neil Harris goal only for Junior Stanislas to level for West Ham.

Stanislas then put West Ham in front from the penalty spot early in extra time before Zavon Hines wrapped it up on the break. However, both West Ham's equaliser and Stanislas's second goal prompted pitch invasions by the home fans.

Before kickoff hundreds of fans clashed close to West Ham's stadium, according to a Metropolitan Police spokesman. A 44-year-old man taken to hospital with a stab wound while there were two arrests.

Last season's surprise semi-finalists Burnley, who have enjoyed a great start to the their Premier League campaign, beat third division Hartlepool 2-1 after extra time.

All of the Premier League sides in action avoided upsets. Blackburn Rovers won 3-1 at Gillingham, struggling Portsmouth beat Hereford 4-1, Bolton Wanderers won 1-0 at Tranmere Rovers and Birmingham City defeated Southampton.

Hull City triumphed against Southend United while Wolverhampton Wanderers needed penalties to overcome Swindon Town after a 0-0 draw.
