Tyson Gay clocks season's best with 9.79sec

American sprinter Tyson Gay notched the world's best 100m record of 2011 with a 9.79sec run at an event in Clermont, Florida.

Gay, 28, on Saturday improved on the 9.89 run by Jamaican training partner Steve Mullings in May, for the year's fastest to date.

Tyson GayGay posted his time in a heat in the National Training Center Sprint Series and did not compete in the final. He had a legal wind of 1.1 m/sec for the run.

Gay also clocked the fastest time of 2010 with 9.78 and beat Usain Bolt, who is also the world champion, when the two met in Stockholm last year.

Gay is due to run the 100m at the Diamond League meeting in New York next Saturday.
