Top seed Haas dumped in first round

May 02, 2007 10:41 IST

Top seed Tommy Haas went out of the Munich Open in the first round on Tuesday, losing 6-4, 6-4 to Sebastien Grosjean of France.

The German, who grew up near Munich, was beaten in just 87 minutes by Grosjean in a repeat of his first-round exit a year ago. He had hoped to use the tournament to tune up for the French Open.

Not even the sell-out home crowd could help Haas, who is 11th in the world compared to his 58th ranked opponent.

Haas lost a break to 2-1 in the first set and smashed his racket on court after losing his serve again to fall behind 1-0 early in the second set.

"I can understand that the fans want to see a winner," said the 29-year-old. "I just didn't play well. I'm extremely disappointed. I feel like burying myself. It's frustrating, a crap feeling not to be able to play well on this surface."

Defending champion Oliver Rochus of Belgium was beaten late on Monday by eighth seed Juergen Melzer of Austria 6-2, 6-4.

Also losing in the first round on Tuesday was Germany's Rainer Schuettler, beaten 6-4, 6-4 by fifth seed Jarkko Nieminen of Finland.

GONZALEZ OUSTED IN ESTORIL

France's Paul-Henri Mathieu upset Chile's world number six Fernando Gonzalez 6-2, 6-4 to reach the second round of the Estoril Open on Tuesday.

Mathieu, who won his third ATP career title last weekend in Casablanca, broke fourth seeded-Gonzalez's serve five times to wrap up his victory in just over 80 minutes in a rain-interrupted clay court match.

The Frenchman plays Russian Igor Kunitsyn in the second round while compatriot Richard Gasquet will face Portugal's Frederico Gil after beating Max Mirnyi of Belarus 6-3, 6-3.

Sixth-seeded Dmitry Tursunov of Russia beat Florent Serra of France 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 and Agustin Calleri of Argentina overcame Danai Udomchoke of Thailand 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.

Russian Nikolay Davydenko, Estoril Open champion in 2003 and a finalist in 2006, and Spain's Tommy Robredo had to delay their first round matches until Wednesday due to the heavy rain.
