Syed Modi Memorial: Sourabh moves to semis with impressive win

Indian shuttler Sourabh Varma continued his giant killing spree as he shocked seventh seed Yun Hu 23-21, 21-19 to breeze into the men's singles semi-finals of the Syed Modi Memorial India Open Grand Prix Gold badminton tournament, in Lucknow, on Friday.

Unseeded Varma snuffed out the challenge of his opponent from Hong Kong in 50 minutes in the quarter-finals.

Sourabh, who had also upset fourth seed Tommy Sugiarto of Indonesia, will next face 16th seed Suppanyu Avihingsanon from Thailand.

However, Sourab's younger brother Sameer was ousted from the men;'s singles with a 12-21, 13-21 defeat against fifth seed Wing Ki Wong from Hong Kong.

Sameer had entered the main draw through qualifiers.

Also moving to the semifinal was the pair of V Diju and Jawala Gutta, who outplayed Hong Kong pair of Wai Hong Wong and Hoi Wah Chau 21-8, 21-16 in the mixed doubles quarter-finals in just 26 minutes.

They now take on Indonesian team of Muhammad Rijal and Debby Susanto.

However, Aparna Balan and N Siki Reddy's campaign ended in the women's doubles with 17-21, 5-21 drubbing the hands of Vivian Kah Mun Hoo and Khe Wei Woon in the quarter-finals.
