Sports Shorts: Mumbai rout Delhi in ill-tempered game

Mumbai City FC packed a strong punch to outclass Delhi Dynamos FC 4-0 and leap to the second spot on the table after an ill-tempered Indian Super League game, in Mumbai, on Friday.

Such was the intensity of the game that one player from each side was red-carded in the first half.

The goal-getters for the home team, which scored its second successive win, were their Romanian captain Lucian Goian (12th minute), the Brazilian mid-field duo Everton Santos (43rd) and Thiago Santos (49th) and Indian international Balwant Singh (79th minute), his fifth of the season and third in the last two matches.

The three points gained from the match helped Mumbai take their tally to 13 points from eight games and jump three spots from fifth spot and lie in second place, three points behind league leaders Chennaiyin FC.

Delhi, who had suffered a 1-5 defeat to FC Goa earlier, remained at the bottom of the league by suffering their sixth successive loss in seven ties.

Prannoy extends unbeaten run as Masters maul Hunters in PBL

World No 10 HS Prannoy extended his unbeaten run as Ahmedabad Smash Masters outplayed Hyderabad Hunters 4-3 in the Premier Badminton League (PBL) in New Delhi.

Prannoy beat fellow Indian Sai Praneeth 15-10, 15-8 in the second men's singles to give his team an unassailable 4-1 lead in the tie.

Earlier, Lee Reginald and Kamilla Ryter Juhl gave Masters early advantage as they notched up a superb come- from-behind 4-15, 15-12, 15-8 win over Hunters' Satwiksairaj and Pia Zebadiah in the opening mixed doubles.

Hunters, however, levelled affairs with Masters after the 37-year-old Lee Hyun II outclassed Sourabh Verma 15-9, 15-11 in the first men's singles.

World No 1 Tai Tzu Ying then toyed with young Rasika Raje and put Ahmedabad 2-1 ahead with a 15-5, 15-6 verdict in the women's singles.

In the inconsequential men's doubles, Kidambi Nandagopal and Lee Reginald of Masters were up against Markis Kido and Yoo Yeong Seong. The Hunters were able to pull one back with Kido and Seong winning 15-14, 15-11.

Profligate Mohun Bagan held by 10-man Indian Arrows

Former champions Mohun Bagan failed to make their 'home debut' count as a 10-man Indian Arrows dished out a spirited show to return with a creditable 1-1 draw in an I-League fixture in Kolkata.

A profligate Mohun Bagan took the penalty route to draw first blood in the 27th minute through Aser Pierrick Dipanda Dicka in what appeared to be a contentious decision by the referee.

But their joy was shortlived as the All India Football Federation's developmental outfit restored parity within six minutes in a fine display of passing football with Rahul Balan slotting it home. It was Rahim Ali who raced past Kingshuk Debanth and Eze Kingsely from the left before a cool-headed Rahul finished it beautifully getting past the Mohun Bagan defenders.

Mohun Bagan stepped up their attack in the second-half and the Arrows got a twin blow -- first in the 65th minute when Amarjit Singh Kiyam was sent off and later in the 74th minute when Ashish Rai had to be stretchered off after receiving a head injury.

But despite playing with 10-man, the Arrows, who consists of mostly India's under-17 World Cup players, put up a solid show.

After six matches, which include four draws, Mohun Bagan now have 10 points, three points clear of Indian Arrows at number six on I-League standings.
