The top-seeded brothers, who won this year's Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon men's doubles titles, were beaten 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

"We're very disappointed," said Bob Bryan.

"We hate to lose and we knew what was riding on this match and the opportunity of what we could have accomplished."

It was sweet revenge for Paes and Stepanek, who finished second best to the Bryans in the final last year.

They will face second seeds Alexander Peya (Austria) and Bruno Soares (Brazil), who beat the Croatian-Brazilian combine of Ivan Dodig and Marcelo Melo, seeded 10th, 7-4, 6-4 in the second semi-final.

The Bryans were hoping to become the first pairing to complete the calendar slam since Australia's Ken McGregor and Frank Sedgman in 1951.

It was, however, mixed fortunes for Indians at the year's last Grand Slam, as the Indian-Chinese pair of Sania Mirza and Jie Zheng lost in the semi-finals to the Australian duo of Casey Dellacqua and Ashleigh Barty.

It took only 65 minutes for the eight seeded Australians to complete a 6-2, 6-2 victory.

Sania and Zheng struggled to hold serve and were broken thrice in both sets.

Sania had bowed out of the mixed doubles with Romanian partner Horia Tecau. The pair lost to American Liezel Huber and Marcelo Melo of Brazil.

Mirza-Zheng came into the event with some good form, having won the title in New Haven the week prior to the US Open.

Barty and Dellacqua, who are aiming to win their first Grand Slam title, will meet the winner of Friday's semi-final clash between Williams sisters Venus and Serena and the Czech duo of Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka.
