Jung fails to qualify for Olympics

Commonwealth Games gold medallist Samresh Jung failed to qualify for the Athens Olympics after finishing a disappointing 17th in the men's 10m air pistol at the 10th Asian Shooting Championships in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Wednesday.

Jung, who won two gold medals in 50m pistol pairs and 25m standard pistol pairs in the Manchester Games in 2002, shot 573/600 to finish way down at the Subang National Shooting Range.

The Indian will, however, get another chance to grab an Olympics berth in the men's 25m standard pistol be held on February 17.

The best Indian performance in the 10m air pistol came from Vivek Singh (576) who finished 13th while Commonwealth Games medallist Jaspal Rana (570) finished 24th.

In the team event, India finished sixth with a score of 1718. China (1740), Kazakhstan (1740) and Korea (1734) claimed the top three positions.

In the men's 50m rifle prone, three Indians T C Palangappa, Satguru Das and Sushil Gale progressed to the qualifying round.

Thirty nine nations are competing in the two-week long Asian Championships, the last chance to grab quota places for the Athens Olympics beginning in August.
