Sharath emerges champion; Puloumi wins double crown

Top seed Achanta Sharath Kamal overcame a stiff resistance from unseeded Sanil Shetty of Air India to emerge champion in the Inter Institutional Table Tennis Championship at Ajmer on Sunday.

Sharath, who reached his career-high ranking of 39, defeated Shetty 11-7, 12-10, 13-11, 6-11, 11-4 in the summit clash to win men's crown.

Earlier, Sharath had beaten Abhishek R of Air India 11-4, 11-6, 11-5,12-10 and Shetty prevailed over second seed Soumyadeep Roy 11-7, 5-11, 12-10, 8-11, 9-11, 11-5, 12-10 to set up the final.

But Sharath had to face a set back when he lost in final of the doubles. Pairing with Zubin Kumar he lost to A Amalraj and Sourav Chakraborty who won 3-1.

In the women's section, top seed Poloumi Ghatak played true to her billing and fought hard to beat second seed K Shamini, also of PSPB, 11-13, 11-5, 11-8, 13-15, 1-11, 15-13, 11-6 to annex the title.

In the doubles, she paired with Mouma Das to get the better of K Shamini and Madhurika Patkar 3-2 to make it a grand double.

In the mixed doubles, Saurav Chakraborty and Mouma Das beat Soumyajeet Ghosh and A V Nivedita 3-1 in the final.
