Romario scores twice in Copa Brasil tie

Former Brazil striker Romario scored twice to take his career tally to 992 goals as Vasco da Gama crushed part-timers Fast Club 6-0 in a Copa Brasil tie on Wednesday.

The 41-year-old, who played the full 90 minutes, opened his account by converting a penalty two minutes before half-time and added another in the 76th minute after a one-two with Andre Dias.

Romario has kept the goal tally himself, although it includes goals scored at junior level and friendly matches. He has set himself a target of 1,000 goals before he retires.

Leandro Amaral also scored twice while Renato and Wagner Diniz shared the other goals as Vasco completed an 8-1 aggregate win in the first round tie against the little-known side from Manaus on the Amazon river.

Fluminense thumped Adesg, from the distant Amazonian state of Acre near the border with Peru, by the same score in another first round, second leg tie to give new coach Joel Santana a winning start.

Santana replaced Paulo Cesar Gusmao, who was fired less than a month into the season. The club last year employed six coaches.
