Paes-Peya bow out of French Open

June 02, 2012 20:31 IST

India's poor run at the French Open continued as Leander Paes and his Austrian partner Alexander Peya crashed out of the second round of the men's doubles event after losing to Mikhail Elgin of Russia and Uzbekistan's Denis Istomin 4-6, 1-6.

The seventh seeded Indo-Austrian pair were shocked by their unseeded opponents in a battle that lasted an hour and 11 minutes.

Despite making any unforced error or a double fault, Paes and Peya lost the match as they failed to convert as many as three out of the four breakpoints that they got.

On the other hand, the Russian-Uzbek duo could manage to convert five out of their 10 breakpoints and advance into the second round.

In the first set, Paes and Peya earned four breakpoints but could make use of only one of them to their advantage, while Elgin and Istomin capitalised on both the breakpoints that they got.

In the second set, though the Indo-Austrian combo managed to save as many as five breakpoints of eight, the unseeded pair converted three of them, which turned to be sufficient to seal the match in their favour.
