June 10, 2011 10:24 IST

The Dallas Mavericks moved to the brink of their first NBA championship by defeating the Miami Heat 112-103 on Thursday to take a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven finals series.

Dallas can take the title by winning either of the next two games in Miami, on Sunday or Tuesday if a seventh and deciding game is needed.

Dirk Nowitzki scored 29 points for the Mavericks, while Dwyane Wade totaled 23 for the Heat and Chris Bosh added 19.

The Mavericks went on a 16-4 run to close out the game, aided by two three-pointers from Jason Terry and another by Jason Kidd.

Former All-Star Mitchell dies of cancer at 55

Former NBA All-Star Mike Mitchell has died after a long battle with cancer at the age of 55, the San Antonio Spurs said on Thursday.

Mitchell, a first round draft choice of the Cleveland Cavaliers in 1978, spent 10 seasons in the NBA, the final six-and-a-half of them with San Antonio.

He later played in Italy before retiring in 1999.

"At each stop in his distinguished career, he was a fan favorite thanks to his outstanding offensive skills and his humble, down-to-earth personality," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said in a statement.

Mitchell, a forward, ranked among the NBA's top 10 scorers in four of his 10 seasons, averaging 19.8 points and 5.6 rebounds for his career.

He scored 14 points in 15 minutes in the 1981 All-Star game.
