Narain ends season on positive note

November 08, 2004 16:42 IST

India's top racing driver Narain Karthikeyan ended his season on a positive note, registering two victories -- a second and third place -- in one of the world's top race series.

The TATA RC motorsport driver and India's F1 hope thus ended the World Series by Nissan championship in sixth position.

The final of the World Series at Jerez, the former home of the Spanish Grand Prix, on Saturday yielded a fifth position, in which Narain held off experienced Frenchman Tristan Gommendy.

Though Gommendy had a huge advantage of using a special set of brand new tyres, still he did not find a way past Narain.

It was a decent result for Narain despite being on this high-speed track for the very first time, whereas race winner Heikki Kovalainen had taken advantage of extensive testing there for the Renault Formula 1 Team, a statement from Tata RC said.

Race two promised a lot after Narain qualified finishing third on the grid, which was a good showing considering that his only chance to practice on the track was rained off on Friday.

Narain was running a steady third and closing on Monteiro before an error under braking cost him some time and put him out of the points and almost a certain podium slot, the statement added.
