Joshna plans to train abroad

August 25, 2005 14:24 IST

Joshna Chinappa, the second ranked junior player in the world, has set realistic goals for developing her game and is working to improve technical flaws and fitness level.

Joshna, who is in Jaipur to play in a national level tournament, said she aspires to become world number one but has set realistic goals for herself and plans to reach the top 20-30 in a year.

"I do not have a full time coach and want to improve upon grey areas in my technique and fitness," she said.

"The expertise needed to rectify the technical flaws is not available in India," the current Asian junior number one said.

Joshna, who had two conditioning sessions in the United States, said she is planning to go to Amsterdam to train under the watchful eye of former world number two Liz Irvehi.

Talking about the Indian squash scene, Joshna lamented that there is no one to push her.

"We have raw talent but that has to be refined. Only Mekhla Subedar, Dipika Pallikal and Surabhi Mishra are good".

Recalling her loss to Reneem El Weleily of Egypt in the final of the World Junior squash championship in Belgium, she said pressure took its toll on her.

"I was under media gaze, had to give a lot of interviews and could not get a good sleep," Joshna said.

She also said that she did not get the Arjuna Award this year because her name was not recommended by the Squash and Racquets Federation of India.
