C'wealth Games champs Jwala-Ashwini beaten

The Commonwealth Games' gold medal-winning pair of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa went down fighting in the Indian Open Super Series badminton at the Siri Fort Complex, in New Delhi, on Thursday.

The eighth seeded Indian duo lost 20-22, 18-21 to Eei Hui Chin and Pei Tty Wong of Malaysia.

Earlier in the day, Sourabh Verma and RMV Gurusai Datt continued their rampaging run in the tournament, notching contrasting victories in the second round, to reach the quarter-finals of the men's singles.

Madhya Pradesh lad Sourabh again led the charge, continuing his giant-killing spree with a 21-19, 18-21, 21-11 upset win over seventh seed Kenichi Tago, while Gurusai sent Yuhan Tan of Belgium packing with a 21-13, 14-21, 21-13 defeat.

However, India No 1 P Kashyap found the going tough against world No 2 Taufik Hidayat and lost 21-17, 21-19.

Top seeds Miyuki Maeda and Satoko Suetsuna of Japan, meanwhile, beat Pradnya Gadre and Jyotshna Polavarapu 21-8, 21-16 in another women's doubles match.

In the mixed doubles, fifth seeds Peng Soon Chan and Liu Ying Goh of Malaysia defeated Akshay Dewalkar and Pradnya Gadre 21-18, 22-24, 21-12, while seventh seeds Muhammad Rijal and Debby Susanto of Indondesia proved to good for Pranav Chopra and Prajakta Sawant. The Indian pair lost 11-21, 21-19, 13-21.

Top seeds Kien Keat Koo and Boon Heong Tan of Malaysia beat Attri Manu and Jishnu Sanyal 21-9, 21-14, while eighth seeds Rupesh Kumar and Sanave Thomas lost 19-21, 12-21 to Yohanes Rendy Sugiarto and Afiat Yuris Wirawan of Indonesia in the men's doubles.
