India's gold rush continues at C'wealth lifting

Indian weightlifters continued their gold rush in the Commonwealth Championships, adding 10 more medals to their 16-medal haul on the second day of the competition in Apia, Samoa, on Thursday.

At the end of Day 2, India's medal tally swelled to 31, including 21 gold.

The team won 15 medals, including 11 gold, on Wednesday, the first day of the meet.

Laishram Monika Devi led Thursday's gold rush, winning the senior women's 69kg category with a total lift of 207kg (96+111).

Rustam Sarang (senior men's 62kg), N Sunil Kumar (senior men's 69kg) and Rajwant Kaur (senior women's 63kg) also won gold in their respective categories.

Sarang lifted 260kg (116+144) for gold while Sunil and Rajwant had efforts of 278kg (126+152) and 172kg (76+96) respectively.

The Commonwealth Championships is being held for Youth (boys and girls), Juniors (men and women) and Seniors (men and women) categories simultaneously.

Other gold medal winners were Sorom Hitlar Tagru (youth boys' 62kg), Kojum Taba (youth boys' 69kg), Y M Nafisa (youth girls' 69kg), Achyutananda Sahoo (junior men's 62kg), Rakhi Halder (junior women's 63kg) and Oinam Geeta Devi (junior women's 69kg).

The silver medal winners were D Senthamizh Selvan (senior men's 62kg), Sambo Lapung (youth boys' 69kg), Swapna Priya Baruah (youth girls' 69kg) and Srinivasan Manivannan (junior men's 62kg).

Subhasmita Mohanty (youth girls' 63kg) and Jasvir Kaur (junior women's 63kg) won a bronze each.
