India bag two more medals at Asian Youth Games

Weightlifter Venkat Rahul Ragala clinched a gold medal in the 77kg category while Shainki Nagar won a silver in the 10m air pistol as India swelled its medal tally to eight at the second Youth Asian

Games, in Nanjing, China, on Wednesday.

Venkat lifted a cumulative total of 310 kg in the snatch, clean & jerk.

The 16-year-old’s best effort came in the third attempt when he lifted 142kg in snatch and 168kg in clean & jerk.

He was followed by China's Xingyu Lu, who had a total 285kg, and Pichet Maneesri (280kg) of Thailand.

In the men's 10m air pistol event, Shainki garnered 195.3 points in the finals and narrowly missed out on the gold medal, which went to China's Wu Jiayu, who finished with a total of 195.5 at Fangshan Hall.

Uzebekistan's Refat Girfanov won the bronze with a score of 174.7 points.

India's Samarjit Singh too qualified for the final round but could only manage 134 points and finished fifth in the competition.

The Indians, who are participating as Independent Olympic Athletes as the IOA is serving a ban, have won two gold, as many silver and four bronze to occupy ninth spot in the medal standings.
