Indian Oil win Surjit hockey

Star-studded Indian Oil Corporation emerged winners for the first time in the 24th Indian Oil Surjit Hockey Tournament, edging out experienced Indian Airlines 2-0 in Jalandhar on Friday.

The winners received Rs 300,000 while the runners-up team Rs 160,000 from the chief guest, Punjab Finance Minister Manpreet Singh Badal.

The organising committee declared Jagdish Ponappa of Indian Airlines as the best goalkeeper, Indian Oil's Raghunath best full-back, Vikram Pillay of Indian Airlines best half back and Deepak Thakur of Indian Oil best forward of the tournament.

Sports Authority of the India, Delhi, bagged the Fair Play Trophy.

Raghunath put  IOC ahead from a penalty-corner in the 54th minute while captain Deepak Thakur consolidated the lead following a penalty-corner ten minutes later.
