Sporting Club, JCT in quarter-finals

November 27, 2004 20:09 IST

Scoring once in each half, Sporting Club de Goa knocked out last year's runners-up Mohammad Sporting 2-0 while JCT Sports Club, Phagwara, prevailed over SBT 2-1 to enter the quarterfinals of the Federation Cup football championship in Bangalore on Saturday.

Sporting Club de Goa dominated proceedings over their Kolkata rivals and went into the lead when Ajay Diwakar scored off a pass from Alvito Rodrigues in the 28th minute.

In the second half, they consolidated their lead when Alvio Rodrigues neatly intercepted a pass from Machperlin Dudu and shot into the net in the 47th minute.

The Sporting Club could have won by a bigger margin had their strikers made use of the good passes by their forwards.

Mohd Sporting came close to scoring in the 16th minute with Abdul Rouf Khan hammering a powerful shot but Sporting Club's custodian Barretto flicked the ball over the bar.

Two goals by Manith Singh in the 7th and 43rd minute of the first half helped JCT men to advance into the last eight defeating a fighting SBT 2-1.

K M Abdhul Noushad scored the lone goal for SBT in the last minute of the first half.

JCT will take on Mohun Bagan in the quarterfinals to be played on November 30.
