Soccer Extras: Rooney's MLS adventure comes to sour end

Wayne Rooney’s Major League Soccer adventure came to a sour end along with DC United’s season on Saturday as Toronto FC scored a wild 5-1 extra-time playoff win to send the former-England captain on to his next career stop.

Rooney’s departure proved far less exciting than his celebrated arrival on the MLS scene just last year when the one-time wunderkind and Manchester United all-time leading scorer was hyped as the second coming of David Beckham.

But in a career packed with glory and trophies Rooney’s time in the MLS will appear as nothing more than a footnote.

There will be no great achievement to underline his nearly two-year sojourn to the United States, the 33-year-old unable to add to his legacy of twice getting his club into the postseason but never winning a match.

If Rooney enjoyed his time in North America he kept it to himself on Saturday, dressing quietly and then offering nothing more than a stone-faced glance in the direction of the media as he turned and left the dressing room without saying a word, leaving it to team mates and coaches to reflect on his contributions.

“I think he gave a lot to the organisation, he was a great team mate,” said United coach Ben Olsen.

“I think he was good to our fans and he was very appreciative of the support he got with our fan base and the community, the DC area.

“It’s an unfortunate way for him to finish.

“I am sure he would have wanted to hit the back of the net and push us into the next round but that’s not how it went.”

Rooney finished Saturday’s contest on the bench after being substituted in overtime, but did not depart BMO Field without offering a reminder of why he is rated one of the game’s great predators.

Twice during a one minute stretch during the second half with Toronto clinging to a 1-0 lead, Rooney forced TFC’s Quentin Westberg to make spectacular saves, later patting the keeper on the back as he walked away shaking his head and looking towards the heavens.

A stoppage-time equalizer from Lucas Rodriguez off a Rooney corner cancelled Toronto’s 1-0 lead but did nothing to deflate the homeside who struck four times in the extra session, including a pair from Jonathan Osorio and one each from substitutes Richie Laryea and Nick DeLeon.

Rooney did not bring the charisma of former England captain Beckham to the MLS but offered a well marketed blue-collar appeal and a rich resume of success and trophies, including five Premier League titles, an FA Cup and Champions League crown.

There were a few highlight reel moments during his time in the United States, including a brilliant long-range strike from his own end of the field against Orlando, while a Twitter spat between his wife Coleen and the wife of his former-England Jamie Vardy kept him in the English tabloid headlines.

But there was nothing accomplished on North American pitches that added anything of substance to his reputation.

He brought a bit more attention and a put few more fans in the seats as DC United moved from RFK Stadium to their new state-of-the-art home Audi Field, but never came close to elevating the MLS profile the way Beckham had on his arrival in Los Angeles in 2007.

Beckham’s impact on the MLS is still being felt while Rooney returns to England to be a player-coach with EFL Championship side Derby County having failed to leave his mark on MLS.

Roma fans aim racist abuse at Sampdoria's Ronaldo Vieira

Sampdoria midfielder Ronaldo Vieira was subjected to racist abuse from AS Roma fans during a 0-0 draw in Serie A on Sunday.

Italian news network ANSA reported that the 21-year-old was targeted with monkey chants by travelling supporters at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris.

“I heard it but I don’t want to talk about it. This happens too often, it shouldn’t be this way,” Vieira told Rai Sport.

The chants were heard coming from the away end, occupied by around 2000 Roma fans, during the first half.

The abuse continued and was noted by fourth official Antonio Giua.

Corriere dello Sport reported that an announcement was made on the stadium loudspeaker warning fans that the match would be suspended if the chants continued.

Vieira was born in Guinea-Bissau but has represented England at youth level, having moved to the country at a young age.

He joined Sampdoria from Leeds United in 2018.

'Horribly bad' Ajax pull wool over Chelsea’s eyes: Blind

Ajax Amsterdam may have inadvertently pulled the wool over the eyes of any watching Chelsea spies with their worst performance in two years after edging past bottom-placed RKC Waalwijk on Saturday, according to defender Daley Blind.

Ajax sneaked a 2-1 away win to go three points clear at the top of the Dutch league as rivals PSV Eindhoven crashed to a 3-0 defeat at Utrecht but Blind said his side got away with a fortunate victory just days before they host Chelsea in the Champions League on Wednesday.

“I think it was our worst match in the last two years,” the 29-year-old defender told Dutch television.”We were lucky to come away with the win. We weren’t well organised and we certainly didn’t play with any sharpness.

“They played a long-ball game but nothing fell for us. It was one of those days where we had to grind out a win,” added the former Manchester United player.

“It was nice to win this kind of horribly bad game. That’s what it’s about. But we must look at ourselves and ensure this can never happen again.

“But hopefully we pulled the wool over Chelsea’s eyes. If we did that then we achieved our mission,” Blind joked.

Ajax, who have won their opening matches in Group H against Lille and Valencia, can take a giant step towards qualification for the next round of the Champions League if they win at home in midweek against Chelsea, who have three points from their two group games.

Bayern defender Suele sidelined with torn cruciate ligament

Bayern Munich defender Niklas Suele has torn a cruciate ligament and will undergo surgery immediately, the German champions announced on Sunday.

The Germany international, who was injured during the first half of the 2-2 draw against Augsburg on Saturday, is expected to be sidelined for several months.

“The central defender suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. He will undergo surgery today,” Bayern said in a statement.

The 24-year-old Suele tore his cruciate ligament in the same knee back in 2014.

It is a bitter blow for the Bavarians who are third in the Bundesliga after failing to win their last two games. They have conceded 10 goals in eight games.

Bayern travel to Greece’s Olympiakos for their Champions League encounter next week.
