Former Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson has revealed that Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich once used an agent to approach him for the manager job when the billionaire first took over the club, and he said no straight away.

According to the Daily Star, United's chief executive Peter Kenyon, however, did make the switch despite claiming to be a lifelong United fan.

Ferguson also insisted that striker Wayne Rooney did ask him if he could leave the club at the end of last season, despite the player's claims to the contrary.

According to the Mirror, Ferguson claimed that it was common knowledge Rooney had asked to leave the club, saying he had ''asked away'' after Manchester United won the title last season.
