EPL: Klopp charged by FA for wild celebrations

Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp has been charged with misconduct for his behaviour in Sunday's 1-0 Merseyside derby victory over Everton in the Premier League, England's Football Association said on Monday.

The German ran on to the pitch in wild celebration of Divock Origi's 96th-minute winner at Anfield and later apologised to his Everton counterpart Marco Silva.

Victory took unbeaten Liverpool to 36 points and two points behind leaders Manchester City.

"Klopp has been charged with misconduct relating to his behaviour in the 96th minute of the game between Liverpool and Everton yesterday," the FA said in a statement.

He has until 1800GMT on Thursday to respond to the charge.

Meanwhile, Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge has been granted additional time to respond to charges of misconduct in relation to alleged breaches of its betting rules.

The charge relates to the period of January 2018 and Sturridge had been previously asked to respond on Nov. 20. The FA said on Monday it had extended the 29-year-old England international's deadline to 1800GMT on Feb. 11 next year.

FA rules prohibit players and coaches from betting on any football activity or providing non-public information to any other person that is then used for betting.

Former Manchester City midfielder Joey Barton, who served a 13-month ban for betting offences when he was a Burnley player, had urged the FA to alter their "zero-tolerance" approach to gambling in soccer after Sturridge was charged.

Earlier, Klopp apologised to his Everton counterpart Marco Silva for running on to the pitch in wild celebration of Divock Origi's 96th-minute winner.

"I have to apologise for how I reacted," Klopp said after Liverpool's 1-0 win in the Premier League.

"I did immediately afterwards to Marco Silva; I didn't want to be disrespectful but I couldn't stop myself."

Anfield erupted after the fortunate winner, with Klopp also getting carried away and running on to embrace his goalkeeper Allison but Klopp said he had meant no disrespect.

"The game was what we expected. It was unbelievably intense and hard for both teams. Both had chances and both goalkeepers had outstanding performances and a very weird goal. I can imagine all the disappointment of Everton in a situation like that.

"We got it (the win) and we'll take it and it was a brilliant night. If I could describe (how he felt when Liverpool scored) I could control it and I probably wouldn't run on the pitch. Today because of the intensity, I cannot hide my emotions, I did it. I'm not sure what the FA will do in this situation.

"The plan was not to run and when I stopped I was close to Alisson. He was surprised -- you should have seen his eyes."

Silva, whose team last won at Anfield in 1999, said the result was unjust but he played down the significance of Klopp's celebrations.

"It was a lucky day for Liverpool because they didn't deserve to win," Silva said. "In the second half we started to control the match on the field and we didn't deserve this result, it should have been a draw.

"I didn't see Klopp run on the pitch; if he did run on the pitch in the moment, I wouldn't see it as disrespectful."

Arsenal and Tottenham charged for failing to control players

Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur have been charged for failing to control their players in Sunday's north London derby in the Premier League, England's Football Association said on Monday.

Spurs midfielder Eric Dier's goal celebration in his side's 4-2 defeat had sparked angry scenes on the touchline, with Arsenal's substitutes unhappy with the England player.

"Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur have been charged following their game. It is alleged that in the 32nd minute, they failed to ensure that their players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion," the FA said in a statement.

The clubs have until 1800GMT on Thursday to respond.

Gabon striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's brace and strikes from Alexandre Lacazette and Lucas Torreira helped Arsenal cancel out goals from Dier and Harry Kane.

Arsenal, who have 30 points from 14 games, leapfrogged Tottenham to fourth place in the standings on goal difference.

Up next for Arsenal is a trip to Manchester United on Wednesday while Tottenham host managerless Southampton.

Spurs fan faces ban for banana skin thrown after Aubameyang goal

Tottenham Hotspur will ban a supporter who threw a banana skin onto the pitch from the away end after Arsenal's Gabonese striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored in Sunday's North London derby.

The Metropolitan Police said in a statement on Monday that four men had been charged after incidents during the match, won 4-2 by Arsenal, at the Emirates Stadium.

Three were charged with throwing a missile onto a football pitch and bailed to attend a court hearing on December 18.

The banana skin was seen on the field of play as Arsenal players celebrated, with CCTV images reviewed to confirm what had happened.

"Behaviour such as this is completely unacceptable and the supporter in question will be issued with a ban," a Tottenham spokesman said.

Anti-discrimination group Kick it Out, which recently reported incidents of racism on the rise, called for the individual to face a life ban.

Aleksander Ceferin, president of European soccer body UEFA, also condemned the incident.

"We have to do more and campaign more against it, we fine clubs but it is not enough. We need to educate the young people but when you see an event like that it is a disaster if you ask me," he told the BBC.

Arsenal’s Aubameyang compared to Henry after his derby double

Arsenal's record signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was compared to the club's all-time great striker Thierry Henry after his double set the stage for his side's pulsating 4-2 win over Tottenham Hotspur in the north London derby on Sunday.

The Gabonese, who signed from Borussia Dortmund in January for 56 million pounds ($71 million), put Arsenal ahead with a 10th minute penalty and in the second-half pulled them level with a dazzling strike after they had gone 2-1 behind.

Aubemayang's performance, which made him the Premier League's leading marksman for the season with 10 goals, prompted the highest of praise from his team mate Aaron Ramsey, who was reminded of Arsenal's all-time record scorer Henry.

"It was unbelievable but he does that in training all the time," said Ramsey of the first-time strike that made it 2-2.

"He just eases the ball into the corners but with pace as well. It reminds me of Thierry Henry's finishes," Ramsey added on Arsenal's official website.

"After the first goal we conceded, we had a moment where we were a bit down. At halftime we were confident. We spoke and we knew that we could do it in the second half, to come back," Aubameyang himself noted.

Soon after his game-changing equaliser, which had brought Arsenal back into the game after Eric Dier and Harry Kane, with a penalty, had put Spurs 2-1 up, substitute Alexandre Lacazette lashed in a third for the Gunners from just outside the area.

Lucas Torreira then made it 4-2 when he dashed in unmarked and fired the ball into the far corner.

"We did it. Then we had the fans behind us and we had power, we felt strong... We don't give up and that's the mentality," Aubameyang said.

Arsenal's three goals after the break also maintained their seemingly schizophrenic record in the league this season, which has seen them score three times as many goals in the second halves of matches as they have in the first.

"We can always see that in the second half we play very well," Aubameyang said.

Southampton sack Hughes after eight months in charge

Southampton sacked Mark Hughes as manager on Monday with the Premier League club mired in the relegation zone after securing only one victory this season.

Hughes, 55, arrived at his former club in March on a short-term contract and helped the south-coast club narrowly avoid the drop last season by finishing 17th in the table.

The Welshman was rewarded with a three-year contract in May but has struggled to improve the team's form this campaign.

"Southampton Football Club can today confirm it has parted company with First Team Manager Mark Hughes," they said in a statement.

Hughes's assistant Mark Bowen and first-team coach Eddie Niedzwiecki have also left the club.

Southampton are 18th in the standings having lost seven out of their 14 matches and they squandered a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 with Manchester United on Saturday to take their winless run to 10 games.

In eight months at Southampton, former Wales, ManchesterCity and StokeCity boss Hughes managed only five victories in 27 games in all competitions.

Their only league win this season came against CrystalPalace in September.

Before Saturday's draw with United, Southampton had lost 3-2 at fellow relegation-threatened side Fulham and had been knocked out of the League Cup by LeicesterCity on penalties.

First-team assistant coach Kelvin Davis will lead the team for Wednesday's match against Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley Stadium.

Southampton said they had begun the search for a new manager, with Hughes's successor set to be the club's fourth boss in two years.

Since Ronald Koeman left to join Everton in 2016 Southampton have also fired Claude Puel and Mauricio Pellegrino.
